True Blue
"I was inspired to write 'True Blue' by one of my favorite blues tunes of all time, Elmore James's 'It Hurts Me Too,' with the idea that when someone you care about is hurting, you also feel that pain. I knew that I wanted to start this album with just a vocal verse, which is how 'True Blue' begins. At first I was going to do it a cappella, but then when I added the National guitar part, that took me back to the Delta blues, which is where my roots are. It seems right to kick off the album that way."
