The Promise Land
"When my friend Christine Balfa once told me about a trailer park in the country outside of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana called The Promised Land, I flashed on two things. One was the ironical name which reminded me of the wry wit I always liked in Sonny Boy Williamson’s songs. The other was a script for a movie I’d written music for called Nobody’s Children, which was basically about trailer park life. Though the movie never got made, the theme of pursuing a dream by escaping from one place and moving to a better one stayed with me. So, with a respectful nod to my hero Sonny Boy, I’ve dropped the "d" in "Promised" and have my character’s girlfriend wanting to get the hell out of the Promise Land."
